Arthritis is not fun, it’s painful, and it can cause discomfort. The interventions that many patients have don’t fully fix the problem, but it may also help with slowing down the progression of the disease. The lack of cure does mean that right now, there isn’t a specific way to stop this condition, but cannabis may be an option for the future therapeutic potential of this.
What Does Arthritis entail
For those who don’t know, arthritis is a condition that causes swelling and tenderness in the joints. While it’s mostly associated with aging, there are some young people with this problem. It affects more females tan males, and usually, the biggest reason for this is a lack of physical activity, and it can be a huge problem for people.
There are scientists who want to treat this, and to help those people affected. It does come with different types too, so not all forms of arthritis are the same of course. You have the following:
- Osteoarthritis which is the wearing down of cartilage in the joint
- Rheumatoid arthritis which is where the immune system attacks the healthy cells
- Gout, which is intense swelling and pain due to uric acid in the joint areas.
- Lupus, which has a variety of reasons for it, including menopause, infection, and medications
- Psoriatic arthritis which affects those who have psoriasis
These can be degenerative or inflammatory. Degenerative causes pain in the joints because they’re breaking down, resulting in bone erosion. Inflammatory usually is where the immune system attacks healthy cells in most causes.
What Cannabis Can Do to Help
With al of this said, what can cannabis do for arthritis? Well, the ECS of course does have different receptors, which also include bone remodeling, and firing the neurotransmitters. There are some studies which say that there may be a connection to the ECS and arthritis of some kinds. According to a study that was done by the University of Edinburgh, it suggested that there was a strong link between both of these, found in the fluid around the joints and what’s called the synovial tissue.
When they studied the mice, it was found that 40% of the cartilage degeneration that happened was due to those that were deficient in the CB2 receptors. Interestingly, when it was found they used a cannabinoid on this, it actually inhibited the progression of the disease in the mice that possessed it, and it actually offered a better result in reducing this. Those that didn’t have the CB2 receptors activated didn’t have any changes.
There were also some findings that aligned with what’s called endocannabinoid deficiency, which is a theory that suggests that not enough endocannabinoids in the receptors will impact this. Due to the fact that this plays a huge role in the body, a lack of this does lead to several health and wellness conditions that go along with this too.
It can help with arthritis in some cases. Both THC and CBD are good for this, since THC does bind directly to the receptors, but this does cause the psychoactive effects that come with this, and neurotransmitter firing in some cases. CBD in contrast has a lower affinity for this, and it is used to increase the levels of the endocannabinoids since it helps to disturb the enzymes which are key here. CBD binds to what’s called the TRPV1, which is involved in the processing of pain, so yes, these can help with arthritis. While it’s not a cure, it can be a good way to handle it.
